THE
ADVENTURE
Join Hank and Carol Fischer on a 12-day
safari to Botswana’s Okavango Delta -- sometimes referred to as
Africa’s Yellowstone -- to view large
carnivores, elephants, giraffes and other African
wildlife. The adventure will focus on big predators
including
lions, wild dogs, cheetahs and leopards. We will spend time
in the field with some of Africa’s leading
wildlife researchers and talk with them about the challenge of
conserving large carnivores in Africa.
This is the place to go
in Africa for an off-the-beaten-path wildlife experience.
Botswana places an emphasis on dispersed rather than mass tourism,
which provides unique opportunities for exciting wildlife
experiences away from crowds.
Our
goal for this trip is to experience wild Africa on remote,
unspoiled wildlife reserves with a very small group (10 people or
less). We will frequently explore on foot or by boat. The
reserves surrounding our camps include several hundred thousand
acres of near-wilderness habitat. Because
the terrain is so
remote and rugged, we’ll travel between camps via light airplanes.
In some cases our group will be the only people in the area. What
you won’t experience on this trip are the big lodges, large number
of tourists and Land Rover traffic jams common in Kenya and
Tanzania. And while we will travel to remote locations, the three
deluxe tent camps where we’ll stay are incredibly comfortable and
well furnished, with flush toilets in the rooms, showers and
excellent food (the camps even have dining rooms and a bar!).
They’re brilliantly scaled to the landscapes they’re nestled
into.
The three camps where we’ll be staying offer a diversity of
wildlife viewing opportunities, from dry acacia plains with great
herds of grazing mammals
to moist marshlands and waterways with
incredible bird life. While we’ll focus on large predators, we’ll
also spend time watching elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hippos, zebra
and all the other species that make Africa such a special place.
Fischer Outdoor Discoveries is conducting this trip in association
with Wilderness Safaris, a South African company that in 2001
received the “Best Tour Operator” award from Conde Nast
Traveler magazine (check out their website at
www.wilderness-safaris.com).
At each camp, we’ll team
up either with professional wildlife researchers or with
Wilderness Safari guides who know the country intimately.
The camps offer opportunities for hiking (with guides in locations
deemed safe), game drives in four-wheel drive vehicles, night
excursions and viewing from hides (blinds).
While
we plan to do some walking and boating, this trip is suitable for
people of all ages in reasonable physical condition. We’ll
have activities at each camp designed to meet the desires of all
participants. The most arduous part of this trip likely will be
the long flight to from the U.S. to Africa.
The
trip cost includes virtually everything from the time we leave
Maun, Botswana until we return
(click here for additional information on
trip payment details and cancellation policy).
A $1000 deposit is required to reserve one of the ten spots on
this special trip. Reservations will be made based on the date
Fischer Outdoor Discoveries receives checks in the mail. Feel
free to call or email Hank or Carol for additional details.
